Calling all Writers, I need your help

I have mentioned in some of my last posts that I am trying to write a book. It is a memoir mainly covering a 5 year period in my life. This is one of the hardest things I have ever done but I need to do it to prove to myself that I can do it.

What I would like from any writers out there is this. Did you ever edit yourself to protect others or their perceptions of you? There are some very personal things that I am going to be writing about and I am leaning toward writing about them. With that being said, if you have written like you wanted to and have put that writing out for others to read, how did you deal with the comments and/or criticism that you got back from your readers. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

I did write a book that I self-published that was about my search for information on my father's family and Ohio History since most of the journey centered on Ohio.

I think you should be as honest as possible but I also know some people change the names of people when writing to protect them.

You should be as honest as you feel comfortable with. If it's crucial to the story you're telling, then be honest. As for criticism, it's how you saw those 5 years and your opinion of what happened. Remember that. Probably no matter what you write, it will upset someone but as long as you are true to yourself, that's the best thing you can do. Good luck.

Hi, Ollie said it best! I also think, if you changed the names and the people that know you will know the real charactors, and if they get offened by it so be it, it is how you saw those 5 years, they need to just own up to it. Helena

I was talking to a friend at work,,,asking her how she would do it,,and she told me that all the great writers write as if all in the book were dead. And that way it is true because there is no holding back and worries of repricusions. Hope that helps.
